#91. Practical Demonkeeping

Practical Demonkeeping: A Comedy of Horrors by Christopher Moore

Pages: 243
Finished: Oct. 7, 2007
Reason for Reading: I'm reading everything by Christopher Moore
First Published: 1992
Genre: comedy, horror
Rating: 3/5

First Sentence:

The Breeze blew into San Junipero in the shotgun seat of Billy Winston's Pinto wagon.

Comments: Travis has been a demonkeeper for seventy years and when he and his demon, Catch, arrive in Pine Cove the Djinn who has been hunting Catch is waiting for them. This is Moore's first book and definitely an enjoyable read but not as good as his later work. The characters are a lot of fun though not as well developed as in his other books. A recommended read but if you are new to Christopher Moore start with something else so you can read him at his best.

Comments

  1. I've got to get around to reading this and other of Moore's books. I read Biff Christ's Childhood Pal a year or so ago and loved it. Next time I need a laugh I will get ahold of another of his books.

  2. Hi stefanie! I'm looking forward to that one, Lamb, I think it's called. But I think I'm giong to read Lust Lizard next since it's a sequel to this one, then I'm going to read his Christmas ones in December.

  3. I actually prefer to read an author's works in the order they're written. It allows you to see how the author grows.

This actually sounds pretty interesting. Thanks for the review.

  5. cj, I like to read an author in order a lot of the time. Needless to say, I'm not with Christopher Moore. But if I'd read this one first, I don't think I may have become so hooked on him.

So, if you do read this first, just keep in mind it gets better from here on in!

  6. I enjoy Moore's books, too, but I haven't read them all, or in fact, this one. And I didn't know there were Christmas ones!

  7. dewey, well actually just one Christmas book. The Stupidest Angel as sally above mentions.

I thought there was another one but I've just googled it and there's a different Christmas book but it's by a different Christopher Moore.

  8. I have two of his books to read now (A dirty job and Lamb) plus I bought Fluke for my friend for Christmas as she is a marine biologist and it seems like just her kind of book. Lamb got some great reviews and I am definiately looking forward to reading it.

  10. This is my first Christopher Moore book, but not my last. My friend Carole read Lamb and Fluke and enjoyed them both; I will read them as well.

I like Moore's character descriptions and almost farcical storylines. He reminds me a little of Carol Hiassen in the way he weaves disparate elements together.

If this is a more "junior" novel, I can't wait to read his other stuff.

Carole and I have reviewed Moore novels on our blog, www.getyourenglishon.net -- check it out! And I hope you don't mind if we link to your blog from ours....
