Sally Ann Saturday

After a fruitless morning of garage sale-ing and finding absolutley no books, I had to finish off by stopping by the Sally Ann. Wasn't I happy to find they were having a bogo sale on books! So this weekend I've added the following books to my library:

Sing Down the Moon by Scott O'Dell - a Newbery Honor book. O'Dell is one of my favourite historical fiction authors for children and I'll be re-reading these all over the next few years with my son.

Thinner
The Dark Half
Dreamcatcher
all by Stephen King - I've decided I am going to re-read all Stephen King's books in order, so I'm picking them up as I see them. I haven't read any of his newer stuff as the last book of his I read was Nightmares and Dreamscapes back in 1993. Up to that point I had read all his books each year as they came out. Now, I was 11 when I started reading him so it will be interesting to re-read them as an adult and see if they scare me as much! I have Carrie and Salem's Lot (his first two) on their way to me now from BookMooch.

Miss Bianca in the Salt Mines by Margery Sharp - another childhood favourite. I've started collecting the series and already have #2 and this is #4.

Surfeit of Lampreys by Ngaio Marsh - I love Inspector Alleyn mysteries.

True History of the Kelly Gang by Peter Carey - a Booker Prize winner, I'm reading my way through the bookers so was glad to find this one.

The Stone Angel by Margaret Laurence. This a New Canadian Library book and I'm collecting them. Well, just the ones that interest me. I'm excited to read this one soon. It is a fictional memoir of a 90 year old woman living in the prairies of Mantioba. These memoir type of stories seem to be a new thing for me. I recently read The Stone Diaries and The Blind Assassin (both Canadian literature too) and enjoyed them so much.

Into the Dream by William Sleator - one of my favourite children's science fiction authors.

The God of Small Things by Arundhati Roy - another Booker Prize winner and this is coming up as the September read in one of my yahoo groups so another lucky find.

Not bad for a total of $3.75!

  1. What's the Sally Ann? I think I know, but I am not sure!

I am thinking it is a Salvation Army shop?

  2. I don't know why, but they aren't called that here.

The bigger stores are all called Salvos Stores, but other than that they are just Thift shops.

Some of the individual shops have names, and a couple of those have been called Sallys!

  3. Now that's interesting. I've never heard of the term Salvos and I don't think I would have guessed it. But I just went and did a google to see what I could find out and here's what I got.

" It is sometimes affectionately referred to as the "Sally Ann" in Canada, "Sally Army" in the United Kingdom and New Zealand, and the "Salvos" in Australia and the United States."
