Comments: I have recently wanted to read Jane Austen again for some time. I had previously read two of her other novels (Pride and Prejudice and Emma) but that was a very long time ago. I've now decided I am not a Jane Austen fan. This is a rather average romance story which is said to be a parody of the classic Gothic novels. The plot (what there was of it) was decent enough but I just felt like I was wading through pages of drivel. I found the dialogue irritating, the banter between the men and women just made me want to scream. Although the style of writing and the language used by the author is indeed beautiful I found the characters immensely irritating. Austen is not for me.

  1. The only Jane Austen story I have read is Persuasion, but I enjoyed it alot. That being said, I'm really not the Jane Austen type of gal!! One of these days, I'll probably get around to reading all of her books. But mostly so I can say that I have!!

  2. uh-oh! I signed up to read this one for a challenge next year. I'm hoping I enjoy it, though we'll see. I'm not sure if I'll be an Austen fan or not, I've never really had much of a desire to read her novels before, but I feel like I should...so we'll see! Thanks for the review!

  3. I found Northanger Abbey to be mildly satirical and a lttle different from her other books. I think sometimes the characters in that book are supposed to be irritating.

If you ever decide to give her another try, try Sense and Sensibility. I could identify with the Elinor character more than any of her others.

  4. I recently read this for the RIP challenge. I tried to make an objective assesment of it.

This being her first book but published much later seems to be different from her usual stuff.
