Welcome

A Bookaholic, Pro-life, Pro-Family, Pro-Oxford Comma, Catholic (with Asperger's) who reads and writes as her obsession. These are the ramblings of the books I read.

I sometimes go through stages of "genre love", I'm addicted to mystery thrillers, Catholic theology, memoirs, 20th century Chinese historical fiction & Victorian fiction, and nonfiction; but you'll find I read an even wider variety of books than that. I have a teensy fascination with macabre non-fiction books about death and anything about insane asylums.

I also tend to post a lot of reviews of juvenile/teen books, with a nod towards what parents can expect to find that might or might not be objectionable.

I also blog about graphic novels and manga on a separate BLOG.

The Siege of Krishnapur

The Siege of Krishnapur by J.G. Farrell
pages: 344
finished: June 28, 2007
Awards: 1973 Booker Prize
Reason for reading: 1) I'm reading the Booker winners. 2) I enjoy historical fiction set during the Indian Mutiny or just British Empire India.
Rating: 5/5

first sentence:

Anyone who has never before visited Krishnapur, and who approaches from the east, is likely to think he has reached the end of his journey a few miles sooner than he expected.

Recommend: Yes! Set in India during the years of the Indian Mutiny in British Empire India, this book runs the gamut of emotions. Humourous at times, yet startlingly real with descriptions of rotting death and disease. The crowning glory of this book, though, is the characterization. We meet a motely crew of characters who, each in their own way, impress upon the reader that he is not likely to forget them soon.

James Herriot's Treasury for Children

James Herriot's Treasury for Children
illustrations by Ruth Brown & Peter Barrett
unpaginated
finished June 25, 2007
rating 5/5

First sentence:

There have been times in the winter when I have regretted being a vet and this looked like one of them.

Recommend: Yes. This is an omnibus edition of 8 of Herriot's children's picture books. I read it aloud to my 7yo and he enjoyed it, but I think I may have enjoyed the stories more than he. They are wonderful, touching stories with beautiful illustrations, especially the ones by Ruth Brown.

The Bonesetter's Daughter

The Bonesetter's Daughter by Amy Tan
403 pages
finished: June 24, 2007
rating: 3/5

First sentences:
These are the things I know are true: My name is LuLing Liu Young. The Names of my husbands were Pan Kai Jing and Edwin Young, both of them dead and our secrets gone with them.

Recommend: Yes, with reservations. It has been quite a while since I read Amy Tan's first three books and this fourth one did fall short of my expectations. Amy Tan fans will enjoy but if you haven't read Tan before I do not recommend this as your first read, try The Joy Luck Club or The Hundred Secret Senses instead.

More Books!

When I see a deal on books I just can't leave without buying something! Today we went into a discount store and as soon as you walked in the door they had this big rack with hardcover books for $1 each. Now, that is cheaper than the price of hc's at Goodwill! So, of course I had to have a look-see and this is what I came home with:

1) The Burglar Who Traded Ted Williams by Lawrence Block
2) First Meetings in the Enderverse by Orson Scott Card
3) The Tesseract by Alek Garland
4) Mr. Ives' Christmas by Oscar Hijuelos
5) No Laughing Matter by Betty Rowlands
6) Cezanne Pinto by Mary Stolz
7) Mary on Horseback by Rosemary Wells

Not bad for $7

Change of Plans Already

OK, so I already made a change to my list of reads for the book awards reading challenge. I've removed "The Bone People". I had it on my list because it is the next book in the book awards yahoo group and I just got it in on Interlibrary Loan the other day. So I went to amazon and started reading the reviews and found out what it was really about. I've thought this over and am going to pass on reading this. The topic is too disturbing.

So, I've replaced it with a book I just bought today. I was at Chapters and they had a $2 table at the front. Not much there but I did manage to score one book. "Twelve Bar Blues" by Patrick Neate, a Whitbread Novel Award winner!
